Why calculate tax brackets?

Tax brackets help explain why someone does not pay their top rate on every dollar. Think of it like stairs: each step has its own tax rate.

1

Gross income

This is your starting number before personal deductions. For many W-2 workers, this starts close to annual wages before the standard deduction.

2

Taxable income

Taxable income is what remains after deductions and adjustments. This is the number that actually runs through the bracket table.

3

Effective rate

Your effective rate is the average rate after all the bracket layers are added together. This is usually lower than your marginal rate.

What is a tax bracket?

A tax bracket is a range of taxable income taxed at a specific rate. The United States uses a progressive system, so higher income is taxed in layers.

Example: If your marginal rate is 22%, that does not mean all your income is taxed at 22%. It means your last layer of taxable income is inside the 22% bracket.
